My guess is that marketing determined what was played in the radio not much was decided by the dj. At least it sounded that way. But the only terrestrial radio I've listened to this century has been talk radio. So maybe it changed and they stopped playing only the few popular songs over and over again.

Yes, but most of the streaming services curate by computer algorithm.
