With ATT I paid $200 up front and signed a 2-year contract which includes paying off the rest of the phone cost plus service. When the 2 years is up, my contract obligation is over and my phone is paid. If I keep my (fully paid) phone after two years, I do NOT pay any less for service only than I did while I was paying off the phone. To me, that's double dipping.CathyI don't follow that. here, if you buy outright you go on an open plan, usually $10 per mionth lower than the contract, as telco needs to recover the subsidy. How does the telco win twice? Theres no money in phones by the way. Low margin, lot of hassle with staff managing them, no money ion that at all.

Subsidized phones is largely American phenomenon. I kNow sprint has subsidized plans and non. I suspect att does also.
