Apple Recalls 222,000 Beats Speakers

Apple Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 222,000 of its Beats Pill XL speakers in the U.S. after receiving eight reports that batteries overheated and one user was burned.

Apple is also recalling about 11,000 of the portable capsule-shaped speakers in Canada, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Apple asked people to stop using the speakers and said it would offer customers refunds or store credit valued at $325.

The speakers have a "b" Beats logo on the grille and the words "beatspillXL" on the handle.

One person reported that a finger was burned after the battery overheated, while another reported damage to a desk.

The speakers were introduced in November 2013. Apple bought Beats Electronics LLC, known for its high-end headphones and music streaming service, in 2014 for about $3 billion.

The deal was the largest ever for Apple, which has maintained a low profile on the merger-and-acquisition front.

Apple's decision to continue to use the Beats brand was seen as a rare move for a company that has almost always focused on its Apple brand.

The tech giant doesn't break out Beats' sales in its financial reports, but includes the business in an "other products" category that includes iPod, Apple TV and third-party accessories.

In the quarter that ended March 28, sales in the category fell 10% from a year earlier to $1.69 billion.
