The 3rd-generation iPad was released in March 2012 and replaced/discontinued in October 2012.

Bring up what used to be called the "rapid-switching tray" by pressing twice quickly on the Home button.
Slide the apps along until you get to Safari.
On the middle of the Safari selection tap-and-slide upward until it disappears.
