I've had a missing-sound problem from time to time that's solved by flipping the sound switch on and off (or off and on). It's as tho there are two guys in the iOS in charge of sound, and they don't always agree.
It's still under warranty -- can you take it to an Apple Store, maybe get a
replacement?
(if you do, be sure to back it up/sync it first so you can "restore from
backup" later.

I have an iPad Air. All setting appear correct but the sound isn't working.
Sometimes if I do a hard reset it will come back but not every time. Last
night it would make one foghorn sound when turned on, them nothing. Any
ideas????
