If you're going to use it (mostly) around where you live, ask around the
neighborhood, check local reviews & press articles, etc. Google cell service
for any special areas you may be interested in.
For example --
I have ATT, which works fine for me. However, if I wanted to have cell
service in the DC metrorail (subway) underground I'd have to have Verizon,
as the all-provider-upgrades are still a ways off. I'm not sure that sort of
particular info is always reflected in providers' coverage maps
(I haven't checked, but since when do they point out their negatives!?)

That depends ENTIRELY on where you will be using the phone.
Go to their sites and closely examine their coverage maps.
