There are always rumors. Look like the gift card is provided to move devices which typically indicates that they are clearing stock for room for the next model.
I have the ATV2 and I am not missing anything significant. The ATV3 has 1080p output; however, most content is not 1080p yet. For the same dollar, anyone would prefer the newer device.
It comes down to this; will the $25 to buy apps, music, ebooks, movies, etc. be OK to do without the latest features? For most it will.
