I have a Google Nexus 7. I downloaded a battery widget. It sits in the upper right corner of my screen. It doesn't get used much. I don't like junking up my screen with widgets since I have put all my apps in folders on my home page. I got the battery widget because it thought it would show me the percent of battery life I have left Brighton the screen without having to tap it to see it. Nope, doesn't do that. I have yet to find in settings if my N7 how to turn on battery percentage. Maybe there isn't one.
I'm a total Apple ecosystem user. Love it because of its simplicity in look and ease of use. My iPad 3 is most used although for the past couple of days I've been trying to use my N7. I sure feel more comfortable when I go back to my iPad.
I realize that many iPhone and iPad users have never seen widgets so
are not sure why people would want such things in iOS so I have
prepared some examples of what widgets are and do, and look like... In
this list I think probably people would enjoy picture frame style
widgets the most I suspect given everyone's passion for photos...
Just so when someone who has an Android says 'Does IOS have widgets?'
you know why they ask. I find them quite useful and was quite
surprised when the iOS clock icon was dead - i.e. a clock icon that
NEVER shows the time. One of my favorite Mac features is when docking
icons (like Adium is best example) have indications of what is
happening (logged on or off, trying to reach network, specific
messages received, etc.) in the actual Adium icon on dock is best use
of this I have seen.

shows several excellent widgets in action. Notice the Pandora is
'live' and can be interacted with from main phone/tablet screen and
the toggles up top for Wifi, BlueTooth, GPS, Sync and brightness.
HTC makes a gorgeous clock with a thermometer that reflects current
temperature or shows clouds or
rain or snow to reflect one's location and can show projected weather
for next few hours/days.

Widgets are about 'live' icons and in an ideal world variable size.

Toggle/interactive widgets are the BOMB.
For example one click Bluetooth on/off (i use all the time since my
hands free speaker phone in car is often still in range when I leave
car).
Or the dim/bright widget I use to quickly knock my phone down to
super dim and vice versa from main screen without entering settings.
Or if me and kids swap iPad/Itouch I would love a Japanese/English
toggle icon instead of having to drill through settings.
A up to the second/minute live clock in one of many styles.
A icon that shows a new item or status info that is dynamic.
A battery icon that shows % as the battery changes and changes color
(red as it hits below 20%, etc.)
Its just sheer stubbornness that iOS does not have them - the 'dead'
clock icon in iOS6 proves how bizarre not having such things is.
