I tried this, but it didn't work. For example after the "pulldown" and waiting till it finished updating it said there were 8 unread emails in the iPad list "folder" but when I opened it there were 25.

When you go to all inboxes, pull down on the top message until the
stretch symbol appears. Stretching the top message will update the
list of emails.
