[iPad] OT Hurricane Sandy

Hi Ed - -

I am in the same boat as you, and agree wholeheartedly that the folks in the path of Sandy (that's a whole bunch of folks) had plenty, if not adequate time to prepare.  But we are not planners, but copers for the most part.  Many folks depend on the "gubmit" to be there for them from cradle to whatever comes next.

Others may argue that there are too many people overpopulating things now and that losing a few "mil" will not hurt things much, but may improve them immensely for everyone else.  I think it is foolhardy for people to live on a beach so close to the ocean that can ravage their lives so easily, but they are counting on past events more than what could happen in the future.

One friend indicated to me that the shift in the earth's alignment since Fukushima has been responsible for the rather bizarre weather patterns we have witnessed from droughts, to floods, to earthquakes, and now superstorms.  Now another "noreaster" is scheduled for the already victimized east coast after the election (that's going to be another disaster I fear) next week.  How much more prepared to you think folks will be for the next one?

You're right about the quakes that we might have to endure here.  Then again, there is December 21, which most folks have already discounted.  But after what has already happened this year, I would not tend to reject anything.  Prepping (in my day it was called stockpiling) is something that folks had better prepare for - - because waiting for FEMA or anyone else to help you may prove to be more disastrous than the actual event.

Kris,  I found little in your comments that I would disagree with.   Personally,  I am probably leaning toward the "agnostic sympathetical"  side when thinking of this situation back east.  While my feelings don't extend to those who couldn't help their situation,  and there were plenty,   these feelings do extend to the majority of those who we are now hearing from begging for essential supplies like water and food.  I have a hard time understanding why these particular people allowed themselves to be placed in this situation.
They knew for over a week that this approaching storm was a strong possibility… and the chances improved with each day.  If I did not see the need to evacuate completely,  I would have at least made a beeline toward obtaining certain supplies…..  Water:  would have purchased at least a week's worth of water for each individual,  and filled up some cheap 5 gallon buckets with additional tap water for septic service if needed.   I'd have acquired plenty of easily storable food.   With a little fore thought one can get along sufficiently well for weeks and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do this .    It amazes me how most people do not use forethought in these circumstances…. Which is probably why I hold the  " agnostic sympathetical"  view you mentioned.   I find it difficult to feel sorry for people who will not take care of themselves and their families.     This is not to be construed that I don't feel sorry for those who are unable to take care of themselves.

We live in the Pacific Northwest very close to the Cascadia Subduction Zone and always face the possibility of a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami like the one that occurred in Japan,  so perhaps I am more motivated to be prepared than most,  but I still think that humanity is losing its sense of self preservation and that concerns me a lot!

Human suffering is a part of life. We all deal with death and grief. It's sucks but it's integral to the human experience. I feel for the people in this path. I was in a few hurricanes. A tornado. And ha e experienced deaths of loved ones and of contemporaries. I doubt anyone is denigrating these empathizes amd sympathies. Possibly just focusing attention elsewhere as people deal with trauma in different ways. Some of use feel it hugely. Others deal with it secretly and others are agnostic sympathetically. Can't relate. It's all good. Personally I question the planets ability to nurture 7 billion humans effectively and question whether human life is as valuable as we once thought when we were 100 breeding pairs after that one super volcano
