I used my first generation iPad in Ireland with no problem. Just remember that if you use a data plan other than wifi your international charges are incurred. The first generation does not have GPS hardware included so I used wifi exclusively and I was able to find my coordinates.

Make sure to check the power requirements and if you need a power adapter. They are generally less costly here than where yo go. And by adapter, I mean the proper plug. Sockets can be different in many parts of the world.
