My needs are very simple....loading on my ipad, slideshows,  minimal editing.

I use iPhoto & adobe photoshop elements. 

Susan, you did not say what your needs are.  If you just want to straighten, crop, adjust color, change from color image to B&W or sepia or do blurred photo edges, etc will handle your needs  also preview has a lot of editing power. The nice thing is both iPhoto & preview are included with your mac.

I use iPhoto to store my photos. Of course you can do simple manipulation in iPhoto too. It is nice that iPhoto has links right in the program to email to Flickr.com and Facebook.
For creative stuff I use CS from Adobe, mostly Photoshop but that is not the easiest.
