Oh yes, I remember paper tape, the original "backup" media !
I also went through a HP1000 mini computer class where we had to write the machine code boot program AND enter the binary code using the front panel toggle switches!
I hated keypunch machines because I could not backspace for a correction! There actually were little pieces of tape to cover over the holes for changes <eek!>
I remember experimenting in Pascal.
Trivia point: The original IBM PC came out with three operating system options: MS-DOS, USCD Pascal, and CPM.
