If it was 23% last night, and Wifi and/or 3G was left turned on, I wouldn't be surprised to find the battery to low to light the screen in the morning.
I always try to plug mine in overnight to charge. In fact, I use the red-on-black clock display in "Digital Clock" in my bedroom.
