I read in a magazine that using the iPad abroad will incur huge roaming charges, or that it won't work at all. I phoned iPad support and asked and they said that you can use it at Starbucks or anyplace with free wi-fi just like in the States and there will be no roaming charges. Now I'm getting worried again. ??? I'm fairly techno-illiterate, don't have an iPhone or an iPod, so this is my first mobile techno-gadget.
For Wi-Fi use, as others have said, there's no problem. But if you want to make use of the 3G, you can simply buy a new SIM card in the new country and use your iPad with the new provider. That's not the problem. The problem I had, when doing this in the U.S. coming in from Canada, is that in order to register for a plan to use with the SIM card, you can't pay cash, you have to use a credit card, and the billing address for the credit card has to be in the country you're using it. I ended up having to ask a friend to register and pay for me. I don't know whether that's the case in England or Ireland.
