Samsung Galaxy Tab gets a decent report from Consumer Reports. I'd start by looking at reviews on it. Read user reports, user groups to see how people use and if your needs are similar.
Other thought is the iPod Touch. Lots smaller, fits in any pocket, many apps already work. WiFi only but can be used with a MiFi if needed.
