This sort of principled, carefully crafted resistance is badly needed now, and it will always be needed. It's in the nature of governments to try to gain complete power over individuals. They won't stop trying, and they have a tremendous amount of power already with which to act.
In autocratic nations, there's no option. Governments will take over. Theoretically, that's not the case in the US. But only continual active resistance will keep the possibility of resistance alive. This is not a one-time thing.
It's not just privacy that's at stake, Pat. It's the ability to retain control of our own lives.
As Tim says, many of the government people behind this probably mean well. But laudable ends never justify bad means. In fact, the bad means become part of the good end, distorting and tarnishing it, too.
Tim calls for discussion. That's good, and necessary.
