OK.  

First try this.



Try setting the "Allow less secure Apps" to the ON position.  This will allow older Macs and older MacOS to bypass the new stricter security protocols.  
Goto: Google/MyAccount/SignIn&Security/ConnectedApps&Sites/AllowLessSecureApps/"ON".

If that does not work then try this.

Check in Google Mail using Safari on the web browser that the IMAP setting is "ON" or enabled.  Follow the installation guide on that page to get the AppleMail to work if it is not already working.
Goto: Google/GMail/Settings/ForwardingAndPOP-IMAP.  Check that IMAP is enabled and POP is not enabled.

As previously posted the AppleMail port is 993 and Use SSL should be on.
Goto:  AppleMail/Preferences/Accounts/highlight Google account/Advanced/.  Check that port is 993 and SSL checked (ON).
