Re: [iPad] Miffed at Siri

There is no question that auto cars will be safer and better than humans, for many reasons. But unless every road is cordoned, so that all possible means of incursion by any human, animal, or inanimate object are stopped, there will be unavoidable accidents. And when there are only auto cars

One should never forget that time and again, machines have progressively proved to improve and become better than humans in very specific activities. There is no reason to believe that it would not happen in avoiding accidents.

Your argument is invalid. I am saying that there are unavoidable accidents, you just agreed in the previous post, now you disagree that there will still be accidents. What we agree on is that the auto cars will be safer

A heat sensor can see heat better than eyes can see humans. Your argument is invalid.

Car is travelling at 60kph. A child, an adult walks out between parked cars. Object detected that cannot be avoided by braking. Could be a deer.
The car will slow down, maybe it will take evasive action, but there will be an accident.

You look at the issues of accidents to decide how to mitigate them, you don't look at incidents that will be able to be avoided, that problem is already solved

The car will slow down if it detects an object within braking distance.
There is a continuous feedback mechanism.

This also follows laws of physics.

Agree, but there will be accidents that cannot be avoided. A car can only brake using the laws of physics.

And if computers control all that they would have less to worry about than human level reflexes and sensors which computers can easily best. The problem with self driving cars is humans. Remove those and the problem is much easier to solve.. But even now all of google car accidents were caused by the humans not the car. Unless that's changed in the last 90 days or so.

The issue is if cannot avoid both, what does it do? It will try to avoid both, but while that will be done better than a human, the laws pf physics are the determinant, they cannot be broken. Speed, grip. Grip changes when changing direction.

No. It's not really. Once all the cars are driverless with the same rules it will be easier to compute. The problem is that the human will choose to swerve into a dog before a human but is that really the right answer? The computer will be more aware and attempt to hit neither object. But. You may say. A human life is more precious than a dog. That's an opinion. You may say..... A child's life more important than an old man. That too is not a fact. A computer wil choose to hit neither. These things are being worked on and debated ethically.

They're working on that. Try to avoid both is the answer.

One. What will it do if it can't avoid hitting a pedestrian or kids running onto the road?
