During the first year after Apple Maps was introduce, and all the furor was raised about it, one of the tech magazines did a thorough and careful analysis, comparing Google Maps, Apple Maps, and perhaps a couple of others.

In both 3D mapping screw-ups and mis-directions, Google had more errors than Apple.

Also, Google downloaded bit-mapped images for maps, while Apple used exclusively scalable vector graphics. This meant Google had to download about 5 times the data (on your cellular dime).
