If you want to swap your phone for a new one, in the Apple plan, you have to pay them the unpaid balance of the 24 months payments in order to keep the old phone. Obviously, if that is AT 24 months, that is $0 balance to keep the old phone.
At 12 months, it's exactly half the total amount that was to be paid in 24 months.
