I seriously doubt that any of the carriers will have contracts at all in the very near future, so you may not have that choice going forward. If you want to lock in on Apple phones, the 'upgrade' deal seems not a bad idea though you never actually own the phone from what I've been reading.

Looks like I am better buying every 2 years through AT&T and having a contract. If I didn't buy every 2 years, that would not be worthwhile.
