I'm definitely looking at Apple's iPhone Upgrade plan for members of my family, instead of any more Verizon Edge payment plans. The phone from Apple is unlocked, but has to be activated with a Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile.
There's plenty of articles discussing it, but it will work for me because I always buy AppleCare+ and I like the ability to upgrade after a year. In fact, I like all of the flexibility associated with it.

You could also buy one on the AT&T Next plan (or similar from one of the other carriers), pay it off right away and unlock it.
