Apple tells me that cdma phones have gsm radios in them but that gsm phones do not have the cdma radios that Verizon would need

In terms of coverage, everyone is pretty good in the DC area.
But a phone bought in Oz is going to be a GSM product, so I wouldn't think of Verizon as my first choice.
