[iPad] Re: Off topic iPhone question

Are you on the Next plan, the 2-year contract plan or did you buy your phone outright at the beginning?  What phone do you have and how long have you had it?

My 2-year contract with ATT will be up in October.  It would be great to hear a little more about your experience so I can make a wise decision when it is time to reup.

Glad to hear your local office is so helpful.  At mine, it depends who you talk to.  Last time I was assigned to a new agent who pushed the Next plan really hard.  When I got home and ran the numbers I realized with Next I'd be paying a lot more than staying with the then standard 2-year contract.  (I didn't want a new phone every year.)  Had to go back to make the switch.

I bought my iPhone through AT& T and I have a much lower monthly cost for service. I would check which companies have service in the areas one wants to go ( which countries in S America) and then compare prices for service.

I have been very satisfied with my local AT & T. They are happy to go over how I can get my service as low in cost as I can for the service I want and they retroactively added a month of foreign service a couple of years ago when I ran up a bunch of charges when I was visiting family in Canada which saved me a lot of money.

I hope you get what you need, Kris. I wonder what hoops you'd have to jump through to get a carrier when you return to the states with your unlocked iPhone. Since they wouldn't be subsidizing your phone in any way, would ATT still expect you to pay the same monthly charge as their NEXT customers who are paying off the phones ATT provided at the beginning of the contract? Or would you be able to pay for provided service only?

Somehow I doubt they have two pricing tiers, so you'd be paying premium prices for a "subsidized" phone you actually bought yourself. They win twice. I wonder how many other countries have telcoms who are allowed to set up such sweet deals for themselves?
