Not a stupid question. I can read without glasses, so I don't need them if I'm out and have to read something. But for a big job like the newspaper, it is much more comfortable. So maybe relaxed.
And it's one reason I went for the iPhone 6+ over the 6 -- comfort, since I obviously was doing fine with the 5 that I upgraded from.
As for driving, the problem is that in low-light conditions I don't see as well, a known issue with cataract replacement surgery, so regular sunglasses in daytime, prescription distance lenses at night. I just leave them in the car.

Carol,
This is probably a stupid question, but why ear glasses if you don't need to?
Driving I can sort of understand cause it might be related to glare, but for reading?
Does it enable you to relax your eyes or something?
