Not having a full OS does not constitute the iPad only a consumption tablet. There all kinds of photo editing apps, video editing apps, text editors, word processors, spreadsheet apps, apps for maintaining blogs, even podcast apps. Doesn't sound to me like it's only a consumption tablet anymore. Sure, many people use the iPad as a consumption tablet but there's a lot more to it than when it first came out. In the beginning, I complained quite a bit about app developers not thinking of the iPad as anything more than a toy, a gaming tab. I wanted more. I wanted what the iPad is today.

The MS folks will always call an iPad a consumption machine since it doesn't run the same OS as the Mac computers do. If you can't do EVERYTHING on it the same way you can on a traditional computer that makes it a "consumption" thing.
Personally, I use my iPad for darn near everything I used to do on my MacMini, and a heck of a lot more. I edit photos, read/send email, keep a journal, have my bank send checks, create art pieces in ArtRage, do all my Italian language writing and homework etc., etc. Doesn't feel like "consumption" to me.
When I was laid up with foot surgery my trusty old iPad 2 was a sanity saver -- my lifeline to the world. Now that I've finally upgraded to the Air 2 I couldn't want for more. It should keep me happy for a few more years.
