If you can hear no sounds at all without your headphones, then check to
see whether the little black button above the volume adjustment buttons
has been turned off. That little button can be selected in the Settings
app to either lock the rotation (which is how I have it) or turn the
speaker on/off. I believe it comes as the default to turn the speaker
on/off.
Also in the Settings app is an entry on the left-hand column for "Music"
-- select that and the available settings includes Volume Limit -- see
if somehow that has been set to 0 (although I would think that would
affect the headphones as well). If you are using a different app to
play your music then check in the settings for that app to see if you
have somehow turned on some setting that only sends the sounds through
the headphones.
If all the settings are as they should be, you may need to visit your
local Apple store and see what the geniuses there can find for a solution.
