I am still working with my iPad 1!!! It still runs well, battery is great and it has 52G storage space left so I'm keeping it until it starts to deteriorate. The problem is that I still have 5.1.1 and when I click on "update" it says there are no updates. So how do I or maybe the better question is, Is it possible to up date to ios 7? Some apps require that now.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that you be able to upgrade to 7 once 8 becomes available.
You will almost certainly be able to update directly from 6 to 8, or you could go to 7 this afternoon, and to 8 later this year.
