Re: [iPad] ios8

Thanks, Jerry.  You have given me something to think about.  Most of those apps will work on my iPhone4S that I've upgraded to ios7.
Odd, Apple makes a great iPad that lasts almost forever, in computer years, then makes sure it is not able to be upgraded.

Unfortunately, not. the initial iPad is not upgradable to anything later than 5.1….. Ditto for some of the older iPod Touch units. So, you'll have to decide whether the apps you'd like to use are worth buying a new iPad for.

Some things to consider are how you'd use the existing iPad if you were to purchase a new one.

1. Sell it off — I doubt that you'd get much for it since it's as old as it is, even though it's still quite useful
2. Use it as an "appliance" — Perhaps you'd like to put all of your music on it and use it with your home music system instead of your turntable, CD player, Cassette Player, etc. I'd initially planned to use an iPad like this until I decided on #3 below.
3. Give it to a family member — In my case, I gave my iPad-1 to my grand daughter who has Down Syndrome; She was 2 at the time; You'd be amazed at the number of apps that are available for special needs kids. Truly amazing to watch her use that iPad. It would have been worth it to buy one just for her if I hadn't wanted to get one with the Retina Screen.
4. Or, do you know anyone who's on kidney dialysis or undergoing chemo — if so, it's a good way for them to pass the time by surfing the internet, reading books or magazines (these can be scanned from paper mags you have) or listening to music.
5. Make a dedicated music player out of it — purchase an amplifier box such as the ones that iHome sold a few years back and you've got a really good music player. Just make sure that the connector on the amplifier matches yours since the iPad-1 uses the large connector and the current iPads use the smaller one.

None of these require a machine with the latest version of iOS and will stretch the iPad-1's usefulness.
