It is called 'phishing' -- their game is to trick you into responding to a link and providing some kind of info.
Any info can be useful to such people -- even just the fact that your address worked and that you opened it.

There are two things you avoid doing, ever:
never use any link in the message, no matter how it looks
never load the images in the message (most people do)

If it were valid, you should be able to go, separately, to the company site (or call them) and get the same information taken care of.
