Believe it is a setting in the iPad. Settings>Mail, Contacts, Cal..
Perhaps an Internet search will show some way to recover. Would also search and ask the Apple Forums.

Yes. Even I have encountered the same. I used Google Calendar with Activesync on my Windows Mobiles and then on Nokia E71 before I got my iPhone two years back. And my Google calendar was extensively set up with all my appointments and reminders. But once I started using the new iCal, a lot of my data has disappeared from everywhere. I dont get reminders, and it hasn't changed after I shifted to iCloud either.
I've kinda given up in trying to fix it. I guess my mind has started working better now that I am less dependent on my device to remind me.

I have backed up to iCloud, and they have not reappeared.
