[iPad] OT 100 Years Tarzan

Normally I certainly wouldn't write on this (or similar!) topics on any of my lists, but while fixing the cats' breakfast this morning I heard the most amusing thing on the radio, so I just had to share it with you.  Hope you get a giggle, too!

In connection with the 100th anniversary of Tarzan, they had a contest on one of the Swiss radio stations to see who could imitate Tarzan's call the best!  They made a 1-minute recording of the best ones, and it was just absolutely hilarious to listen to it!!  The radio people were amazed at the amount of participants and also the amount of e-mails that came in.  A man from Lucerne wrote to say that his family was related to the Weissmüllers  (Johnny Weissmüller was the original Tarzan in the first movies), and his parents wanted to name him Johnny.  It was not allowed to give a baby a nickname as the official name at that time in Lucerne, so they had to name him John.  This, of course, was not a big problem, as they called him Johnny anyway, so there is a Johnny Weissmüller living in Lucerne today!  LOL

Many people e-mailed to say how much they enjoyed reading Tarzan comics and seeing the movies, and one lady told about a childhood memory:  as a little kid she helped the man at the newspaper stand at the end of the tram line keep his stand straightened up, and as "payment" he gave her Tarzan comics since her parents weren't willing to buy "such junk" for their daughter.

Another lady was wondering where she could buy "Tarzan at the Amazons," and was told to go to Amazon!  LOL  Then they were careful to specify that there was an "online bookstore" where the Tarzan items could no doubt be bought!  I had a look, and you can get MP3s, DVDs, BluRays, soundtracks, and, and, and!

They gave quite a bit of information about Edgar Rice Burroughs and his three Tarzan books.  I am now wondering if they are available for download (probably free?) in the iBooks store.  I will soon find out!

I personally loved reading the Tarzan literature and seeing the movies.  I'm wondering if maybe they will be showing some of them on TV in connection with this anniversary.

It is interesting to see how popular and well-known many of the older literary figures like Tarzan and Jane are today, not only in the English-speaking parts of our world!  I wonder how many "Janes" were named after Tarzan's Jane.

Any fun memories to share with the rest of us?

Carlee
