Well, "sync" is short for "synchronize" which implies that the data on
both devices would end up being the same, so that what is new on the
handheld would be merged with what was on the computer and what is new
on the computer would be merged with what was on the handheld resulting
in both datasets being identical.

There is nothing about the concept of synchronizing that implies that
the data of one will totally overwrite the data of the other. It may be
the sorry state of things as they now exist, but the concept of
synchronizing devices is different from the reality.

The confusion is quite understandable and is something that needs to be
addressed by the handheld makers and their programmers who write their
computer components.

I noticed that you begin by stating "One topic that needs to be stressed
is what exactly "sync" means." Yet you don't provide the meaning that
you say needs to be stressed. You only say that people are confused and
think it means "merge."

So what does "sync" mean to you?
