I would contact Apple or take it to one of their stores since you might have a defective device that could be replaced.

Yes, several times. When I try using it instead of my Apple ID it doesn't recognize the fingerprint. So I went back to the Apple ID.pat h - oh

I seldom use the fingerprint sensor. Much simpler just to tap out the passcode.
No idea how others feel, but for me fingerprinting will be useful only when any part of any finger can be used from any angle.
