My understanding is this.
Excluding se Asia the world uses GSM. Verizon and Sprint and SE Asia are CDMA. APPLE TOLD ME that GSM phones only have the GSM radio. CDMA phones have cdma and GSM radios.
So. If you have an unlocked Verizon iPhone 6 or above them you're good to go. That said. Verizon may lock it until you pay your obligations. With sprint you can't unlock a phone for 90 days. You can travel but get a special SOC added to your plan. Or give dates and get unlocked for those dates.
My advice. Always buy the phone. From Apple. Then go anywhere.
Unlocked Verizon phones contain the hardware to do international. Verizon website said that their phones are unlocked and the MSL code if needed are 000000 or 123456.
Hope this helps!

One question: if I were to purchase an unlocked phone from Apple, and then were to travel internationally ( say somewhere in Europe) could I purchase a local Sim card there to use temporarily, then switch back to Verizon's back home?JoanB
