In my experience, the security number changes with the expiration month of a credit card, so a recent number would not match with the expiration date of a card used "way back when".
Hope this gives a clue...

Way back when, when I first had an iPod, I had to set up my iTunes account, I had to enter my bank info. That was in case if my iTunes account went to 00.00, then Apple can use my bank account to cover their cost. But I always keep money in my account. I never go to 0.
All they are asking is the security number on the back of my card. When I enter that number, iTunes won't accept it.
