The unlocked phones are usually available about 3 months after the initial release.

My next step is to go to my care cricket, and see how long it was last year before they got the iPhones and that will tell me approximately how long before I can get mine.

Aren't US carriers now REQUIRED to unlock phones on request for customers whose phones are fully paid off?
If so, get a full-price phone for your carrier and have them unlock it.
