It isn't "a bad idea" — it's a personal choice.

Kris spends months at a time in other countries than the USofA, and an unlocked phone means he can just get a local SIM card and pay-as-you-go while there.

I am on ATT (3 iPhones, Family Plan), and don't travel much, and therefore have no problem with phones locked to ATT.
