Well. I didn't have problems either. But this solution is much more elegant and more easily visible. I am sitting at my Macbook Pro right now, typing on its keyboard.
The shift key works to produce UPPER CASE only if one of my fingers is resting on it — so I obviously know that it is being pressed as I type the text.
The Caps Lock key LIGHTS UP when active.
The virtual keyboard on the iPad responds in neither of these ways.
Normally, I tap the <Shift> key, then the letter I want capitalized.
Now, when I do that, the virtual key I'm tapping is displayed in upper case rather than lower.
