When my (original) iPad was new, I used to put it to sleep like that and then wonder why it made sounds when, for example, an email was received! If it's asleep, it is still receiving signals and using its battery. If you want to stop it from doing that, you need to hold the sleep button until you get the signal to "slide to power down" and do that.
