When the SKY-FM in my car has switched itself back to 128kbps, it just sounds wrong. Normal people can tell, Jim. But you need to make the little effort to compare. And then you need to steel yourself to thinking outside the box, to going beyond what "everybody knows". It can be uncomfortable to buck the crowd.
People used to love their 78s, too, and their 45s, and their 8-tracks. Our brains accept what's there as normal and nice. If we're mentally balanced, we adjust to and accept what we have. But after a while, being human, we start to look further afield, to go beyond balanced, to find a better balance.

Particularly when you are driving to work through traffic, or commuting on light rail.
