And unfortunately while the iPad's market share is down,
percentage-wise, it's actual number may be growing, so the market-share
is really a deceptive comparison.
Yes, as more tablets have flooded the market, iPad's overall share would
have to drop, as Jim points out.
But I don't think it's fair to hold that against them, if their sales
numbers keep increasing as more and more people enter the tablet
marketplace.
And Jim is quite right to point out that the discussion shouldn't hinge
around a single model -- many people are still using their original
iPads and shouldn't be counted out of the market-share simply because
they haven't upgraded.
So the Surface2 will enter the marketplace and will either increase the
Surface's market share or not. But even then, if it doesn't increase
the market share (because the market keeps expanding) yet manages to
sell in good enough numbers for Microsoft to continue to develop the
product, I don't think it's right to say it's a dog.
I think that just as with politicians, companies and high-tech pundits
put too much emphasis on percentages of a limited data pool and don't
pay enough attention to actual numbers and thus the profitability of a
certain product.
That has been one of Apple's biggest reasons for success -- while many
people make statements that try to denigrate Apple as a computer
platform because it is some tiny percentage of the overall computer
marketplace, Apple has simply smiled and made huge profits and kept on
its own path. They've ignored the naysayers who have said that because
it's such a (relatively) small percentage they're not really a
contender, and continued to reap huge profits because in an
ever-expanding marketplace that small percentage has continued to grow
and grow as real numbers even though the percentage has remained about
the same. And Apple has laughed all the way to the bank.
Regardless, I hope that the Surface survives and continues to evolve
just as I hope that the Android tablets continue to survive and evolve
-- having competition in any field keeps everybody on their toes as they
try to innovate and often adopt competitors' new ideas in an effort not
to fall behind.
Competition is good for everybody.
