That's if you're assuming that touch will be the preferred input for
text or numbers.

Do you write your text or number entry on your iPad? Probably not.
Yes, I know there are apps which recognize handwriting on the iPad and
can convert it into text/numbers, but most people I know who have iPads
and iPhones use the on-screen keyboards for any data entry, and only use
the touch to move between screens and select apps to open up or to
select names in a list, etc.

I can easily imagine doing that on a vertical or angled screen, just as
I do on my iPad. When I'm doing lengthy text input on my iPad I don't
even use the onscreen keyboard -- I use a bluetooth physical keyboard,
as does my wife with her iPad.

I think the advantage of a touch screen in the notebook or desktop world
is that it will eliminate mousing, so there will be one less device to
mess with and raising your hand to touch something onscreen will be
easier than taking your hand off the keyboard, placing it on the mouse,
moving it around and then returning it to "home position" on the
keyboard to continue with keyboard data entry. But that's just my opinion.

I do think my next windows machine will be a touch-screen computer for
just that reason.

My current laptop has a perfectly good touchpad but I don't like using
it much, so I have a mouse. There are times when I move the computer
around and don't feel like using a mouse so I use the touchscreen, but I
hate it when my hand accidentally brushes the touch pad when it's
enabled and suddenly the cursor isn't where I expected it to be and I
start typing in the wrong place. It would be nice to get rid of the
mouse and still not have to use the computer's touchpad!
