Dreadful.  A volume control should control volume.  Period.

In my car, there is a stalk on the side of the steering column tht controls the turn signal. Also the headlight high-beams.

I find that for me, multi-function is a Good Thing.

I also find that there is nothing on the iPhone that I am listening to and want to controle the volume of when I am in the middle of taking pictures.
