Ive been told I don't understand Apple, I accept that. I know the Apple story, perhaps my opinions nowadays differs from the Apple way.
What I find confusing now, is that Ive seen some here who don't want features as it causes clutter. Another who wants Apple to be less popular and be a smaller niche. David below who feels that Apple used to be more than just a large company that has to make money. The other David who wants better leadership to take it into the future, and in a position of strength.
To me, some of these ideals appear to be conflicting. I say that as a question for discussion and not a criticism of any persons comment. I am interested in how long time Apple users see Apple in the past, now, and in the future.

What both companies need to do (Microsoft and Apple) is to stop trying to replace the irreplaceable and instead try to find people who are truly leaders in their own right and with their own vision and trust that they will be able to pull the companies into the future still in their positions of leadership and strength.

Yes, I agree. But Apple has a particularly acute problem here. It came into being and thrived largely because of its identification with two individuals, the more charismatic of whom is now dead. And Apple doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with Wozniak. Perhaps they see him as a potential loose cannon. Huge businesses can't have loose cannons rocking the PR boat.
What's special, now, about Apple, with the founding magicians gone? Just better design and integration? It seems so. That may be enough for latecomers, and latecomers are the ones who matter to the bean counters, like Cook, who are now in charge. Apple is just another large company that has to make lots of money to survive. Too bad. It used to be more than that. Nothing lasts forever.
