That seems the best option. Like you I see the iPad as for viewing, consumption, but I also see it as a laptop replacement on a trip, which for me was to store photos. But are SD cards will be the next best option

Exactly Jim, that is my point. My photos taken with my iDevice, have open file access,pe rfect. My photos, imported from my camera via CCK, should also have open file access
This is not a problem I have ever run into, simply because I have never thought of the iPad as a *storage* device. For me the iPad is for viewing (e.g., from camera via CCK) or for display (e.g., selected cropped, tweaked images sync'd from my computer after processing).
I use large SD cards, and even if I transfer images directly to the iPad, I later use the same, un-erased, SD card to transfer to my computer.
