Standard-definition broadcast television (at least in the US) is 720 x 480 pixels, or a ratio of 3:2
High-definition broadcast television (at least in the US) is 1280 x 720 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels, or a ratio of 16:9.
The current iPhones are 960 x 640, a ratio of 3:2 -- standard def scaling.
If the display portion of the iPhone adds about 0.55 inches in the long dimension, and the display retains the current "retina" resolution of 326 pixels per inch, and the same 640 pixels in the short dimension, that display becomes a 16:9 display proportion, and can display HD video full screen and uncropped.
