I have the 10.5 iPad Pro and an Apple Smart Keyboard which does put the device to sleep when closed. I would contact Apple as yours will be replaced if it's defective.

—ryanSent from my Apple iPad Pro Hi,
I have just purchased a new iPad Pro (10.5) and a Smart Keyboard. I have a question that I'm hoping someone here can answer for me. Is the keyboard supposed to act like a Smart Cover, in that when it covers the screen, the iPad goes to sleep and when removed from the screen, the iPad wakes? Mine does not and I need to find out if there is a setting that needs changing (and where that is) or if it just doesn't do that.
iPad Pro 10.5 running IOS 11.0.2
