Re: [iPad] Why Apple Music Missed a Beat

The problem with profits in the car industry, is not because the occasional plant is unsuccessful.

There is moo lay in every industry.
If a plant in a country fails to generate profits, whole industry can not be blamed.

Before Apple started making money with iPhone, there were companies like Nokia, Blackberry etc. who were making good money. There were companies like Qualcomm, Panasonic, Alcatel, Sony, LG who entered the business of mobile handsets and left after they failed to get returns they wanted or expected.

Re: [iPad] Why Apple Music Missed a Beat

The differences are "where establish players were making all the money" but in the car industry, profits are tough. Plants shut down as there is no money in it. I will bet that Apple never make cars, as they are not stupid and they want to make money. They will make a box, an ATV size box, that drives sensor technology on the car. This tech will intially manage collision detection, and any other useful data. A self drive car is very easy to do, the tech to manage that is old hat. Aircraft have had that tech for decades. The issue is not self drive, its how failsafe it can be. And what to do when it fails. Thats the problem in my opinion.

So Apple took an industry where establish players were making all the money and turned it into an industry where those players still make products but Apple controls mother majority of the profits. The same thing that it hopes to do with the automobile industry

Re: [iPad] Why Apple Music Missed a Beat

One need to remember that self driving cars has become a goal for quite a few corporations.Almost all major US, German, Japanese, Korean etc. automakers are working towards this goal with known or unknown projects. Apart from this, Google ( now Alphabet), who are pioneers and Apple are in this race. As the projects mature and details become public, they will learn from each other and have standards fixed for various interfaces.
No one can bet as to who will end up as ultimate leader.

Only thing sure is that whosoever becomes leader, is bound to reap huge financial bounty.

Re: [iPad] Why Apple Music Missed a Beat

Absolutely, where it takes a leap of faith, Jim.  I think I may still have that book.  It's certainly worth re-reading.  But predicting full highway automation is not a leap of faith, it's a gullible willingness to mistake a possibility imagined for a reality actually built.

Clarke was disappointed in the lack of - practically the absence of - progress in space exploration after the initial Cold War push petered out.  It's not enough to start - you have to do the very hard work of following through.  Similarly, you can introduce a few low-lying features of automobile automation, like front-end collision avoidance and computerized braking systems, but from there to fully automating highway travel is a long, hard slog filled with enormous obstacles.  You have to imagine and start, of course, but then you have to have the patience and commitment to stay the course, through much discouragement and hoards of competing priorities.

Certainly, there will be little victories, like the backup and lane-watch sensors that have already made my driving easier and more pleasant, but from there to fully automating all highway travel is like the distance from Cape Canaveral to interstellar travel.

Respectfully, bad comparison.  Predicting that A will cause B is different from observing that C already does cause D.
